Happy Mezcal Week!

Happy Mezcal Week!

Mezcal is the name of spirits made with agave. Even tequila is a mezcal. But, not all mezcals are tequila. Tequila can only be made with Blue Weber Agave. All other distilled beverages with agave are called mezcal. Not all but most mezcals I have come across have a smoky flavor to a greater or lesser degree due to the traditional methods of roasting the agave.

This week we are featuring a PumpkinĀ  Mezcal Salsa Boracha featuring Vago Elote Mezcal plus a smok'n good selection of featured cocktails. These drinks are $2 off all week.

+ Ancho Amber Margarita - Montelobos Mezcal, Grand Marnier, Ancho Reyes Poblano Chile liqueur, lime, tajin rim.

+ Oaxacan Fall Old Fashioned - Vago Espadin Mezcal, Black Walnut Bitters and maple syrup.

+ Mezcal Flights (while supplies last):

Vago Flight (Espadin, Ensamble, Elote): A fun way to taste the differences within one brand. The traditional unaged Espadin. Each batch of Ensamble is different featuring a blend of agaves. The Elote which is a fun twist being infused with roasted corn.

Quiereme Mucho Flight (Cuishe, Tepextate, Tobala, Espadin): Four different types of agave are represented here. Here's a blog post that describes them and there is a tasting sheet to learn the properties of each there too.

Montelobos/Ilegal Flight (Montelobos Espadin, Ilegal Joven, Ilegal Anejo): Montelobos, one of my favs, is featured in our Ancho Amber margarita. Ilegal Joven is another popular unaged mezcal. Plus, Ilegal Anejo which is aged to taste for about 13 months, using a combination of new and used American oak, medium char barrels. This allows you to taste two unaged Jovens from two different brands plus one aged. An interesting flight since most mezcals are not aged (or so I have been told).

I've been thinking that it would be cool to have a mezcal tasting class in the New Year. Let me know if you would find this interesting. I have a mezcal rep who is willing to lead us.
